It’s all about light. Light reveals and conceals. A highly observant guy (Leonardo da Vinci) once said, “Of all the original phenomena, light is the most enthralling”. Leo knew the truth…
I like it when light surprises me, catches me off guard, makes me think about it differently. I like it when light plays a part in a show, when it participates in the action and supports the storytelling.
I love using new gear - LED’s, video displays, moving lights plus all sorts of other odd, interesting light sources to light my shows. Integrating all that technology into a show, in support of a great script and inspired actors (or a great band) – that’s pretty much magic.
I live in So Cal. I love traveling (for work or fun).
I’ve been designing for a while and have a big ol’ stack of credits. That’s them over there on the left hiding behind the word “resume” (they’re shy, not quite sure where they get THAT from…). Magazines have published articles about my work. They’re also over there on the left. Click. Read.
Critics have said nice things about my shows. Since many reviewers don’t even mention lighting, I’m grateful when someone notices that my work added to a show they enjoyed. Click on “reviews” to read a few choice passages.
Awards? Yeah, I’ve got some of those; a slew of nominations (and the occasional win) from some organizations who know a thing or two about theater.
If you’d like to see some of my past work, the portfolio page contains a selection of my projects and shows, so take a look.
Want me to come talk to your techs? Your students? More than happy to. I’ve got a few different presentations that were created to educate and inspire. Click over to “workshops” to see more.
I think about lighting, shows, musicals, concerts, events, and my industry a lot. Probably too much. Can’t turn it off, in fact. So every now and then I dump whatever is in my brain out. My blog is the lucky(?) recipient of all that info so if you want to know what’s been swirling around in my head recently, click on the blog link.
I believe in engaging in my industry which is why I read voraciously, attend trade shows and am a Professional Designer with the Association of Lighting Designers. All of this makes me somewhat of a lighting geek, which I hope is not a problem for you.
Finally, like I said, I’ve been doing this for a while now. I get asked to work with the same folks a lot; and I think that says loads about me, my process, and my “product”. Despite the preponderance of the word “I” on this page (hey, it’s a profile page – it’s supposed to say stuff about me…), I’m a hardcore collaborator. Truly great, jaw-dropping ideas rarely come from one person; they come from creative people working together, fueled by passion for what they do. I like working with creative types who aren’t afraid to link arms and take a jump into the unknown. I’m not afraid of really big ideas; in fact I run headlong into them because sometimes, over-the-top is a great place to start.
And now I want to work with you. Because you seem cool and creative, too. So give me a buzz. Let’s talk about light, design, your project, big ideas, and anything else that comes up.
I’ve done a lot of work for Disney. All that stuff is owned wholly by them. Everything else is copyrighted by yours truly, so no stealing.
